EUDR at MEO®: why we support the EU Deforestation Regulation

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is a significant step in the global fight against forest destruction. It stipulates that certain raw materials, including bovine leather and wood, can only be sold in Europe if their origin can be clearly traced and they are not connected to deforestation or forest degradation.

For MEO®, the EUDR is more than just a legal obligation. It reflects our values of quality, responsibility and trust. We have long-standing relationships with carefully selected international partners whom we know personally, and we understand their production practices. As part of the EUDR framework, we have reviewed and documented our supply chains in detail once again.

Forests are a fundamental part of the global ecosystem. They store significant amounts of CO₂, regulate the climate, provide habitats for countless species, and support the livelihoods of millions of people. However, when forests are cleared for livestock farming, leather production or timber extraction, habitats disappear and large quantities of greenhouse gases are released, contributing directly to climate change. The EUDR addresses this issue by ensuring that products made from bovine leather or wood do not originate from deforested or degraded land after 31 December 2020, and that production in the country of origin complies with applicable laws.

MEO® fully supports these objectives. We place great value on ensuring that our leather products originate from transparent, traceable and legally compliant sources. This involves requesting proof of origin for the hides used, identifying the regions involved, and confirming with our suppliers that the raw materials do not come from deforested areas. At the same time, we ensure that all production takes place in accordance with the legal requirements of the country of origin. The EUDR provides a clear and structured framework for implementing and documenting these standards.

For our customers, EUDR conformity primarily means greater transparency and higher product assurance. Anyone purchasing leather products from MEO® can be confident that the materials used were not obtained at the expense of forests or protected ecosystems. For us, responsible consumption means combining pleasure and enjoyment with a conscious and respectful approach to natural resources.

With this in mind, our commitment is clear:

Our leather products are EUDR-compliant and come from transparently documented, legal, deforestation-free supply chains.

We want to demonstrate that MEO® views the EUDR not only as a regulatory requirement, but also as an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability in product categories based on natural, animal-derived or plant-based materials.
